PONTING SLAMS POSSIBLE MOVE NORTH FOR SHIELD
Ponting slams possible move north for Shield

Ricky Ponting has again run up his traditionalist colours by criticising a proposal to shift Sheffield Shield matches away from the capital cities.

Ponting says a suggestion to schedule Shield matches in northern Australia in August and September -- to free up time and southern venues for more Twenty20 matches -- is a direct threat to Test cricket's nursery.

The Australia skipper strongly defended the primacy of Sheffield Shield cricket.

"There seems to be a lot of talk about ways and means to make the Big Bash bigger and give more time to the Twenty20 game," Ponting said. "Moving games to the Top End, you're going to lose something there somewhere.

"Those young guys are not going to get the chance to play at the MCG and the SCG and those sort of venues, (and) play at the Gabba early in the season when the wicket is green.

"Those things are what have made Australian Test players as good as they are, because of the way that they have learned to adapt to different conditions -- and on the conditions that you play Test matches on."

In the past Ponting has spoken out against reducing the Shield from 10 games to eight per state per season. His latest comments were in response to a press report that quoted Australian selector and South Australian high performance manager Jamie Cox suggesting Shield matches be scheduled in the tropical north.

This would free up southern venues to host more T20 games in the summer.

"Look, I'm sure they'll find some way around it," Ponting said.

"I'm not sure what exactly it's going to be because it sounds like at the moment all the talk is about just trying to make the Big Bash even better. And I'm supportive of that because it's obviously been a great tournament this year.

"But I just don't want it to interfere with young and up-and-coming Test players getting the right opportunities and experience to play good hard, solid Sheffield Shield cricket.

"That's what's made all of us guys what we are today -- the fact that we're brought up in a really hard, tough, first-class cricket system. And I would hate to see the day that that's ever changed, or compromised."

Cox is on the record saying the Sheffield Shield's primary role is to develop Test players. But he believes the Big Bash can expand without diluting the domestic four-day competition.

"I think it can (co-exist) but it means stretching the season," Cox said this week. "We've got a wonderful venue in Darwin, wonderful one in Cairns, Townsville -- I was there for some Australia A games last year, a terrific place.

"Whether it's viable to take games out of season up to those places or whether enough people think it is important enough . . . let's have a look at it."

Cricket Australia is looking at expanding the domestic T20 competition from 17 to 31 games in 2011-12.
