Ponting faces hard slog with no rest Source: The Sunday Telegraph - January 24, 2010 National coach Tim Nielsen says Ricky Ponting will not be placed in cotton wool despite fears Australia's heavy one-day schedule could cut short the captain's Test career. Nielsen revealed Australia were unlikely to use a rotation policy this year due to a series of extended breaks in the international calendar. Australia launched their one-day campaign against Pakistan on Friday and are scheduled to play another 36 limited-overs matches before the 2011 World Cup - a tournament touted as Ponting's likely one-day swan song. The 35-year-old showed signs of vulnerability during the recent Test summer and last year was rested for the one-day showdown against New Zealand, only to cut short his sabbatical when Australia slumped to a 2-0 deficit in the five-match series. Nielsen said the team hierarchy was mindful of Ponting's welfare but is hoping to avoid the prospect of putting the skipper on the sidelines. "Until the World Cup is over next year, he'll be playing as much one-day cricket as we can get without compromising his body or his mind," Nielsen said. "We do need to be careful about how much he plays, but at the moment, he's fit and fresh and going along beautifully. "With Ricky not playing the Indian Premier League and Twenty20 cricket, he'll get some nice breaks over the winter period. "One of the major reasons behind him retiring from Twenty20 cricket (last year) was to give himself those rest periods to maintain his hunger for one-day and Test cricket. We'd like to see him playing enough one-day cricket to keep him moving along nicely." Nielsen said the prospect of rotating players would be put on the backburner this year, with the national team to play just four more Tests before the Ashes in November. After their one-day clashes with Pakistan, Australia will play a five-match ODI series against West Indies, New Zealand and England, followed by seven matches against India on the subcontinent. Nielsen said the structure of Australia's 2010 playing calendar gave players sufficient rest between matches. "I'd like to think that 10 or 12 of our squad will be involved in all our one-day games, it would give us great experience as a team before we go into the World Cup," he said. - PETER BADEL |
