PONTING HITS DOUBLE TON
Ricky Ponting hits double ton as Michael Clarke falls for 166
Source: The Australian - January 15, 2010

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has finally been dismissed but not before becoming the first player to score a Test double century at Bellerive Oval.

Ponting scored 25 bounadries in his marathon innings before chasing a wide ball and offering a simple catch to Pakistani captain Mohammad Yousuf off the bowling of Mohammad Aamer when on 209, midway through the second session of the second day of the third and final Test.

Vice-captain Michael Clarke lost his wicket shortly before Ponting passed 200.

Clarke was dismissed for 166, not playing a shot to a ball from Danish Kaneria which pitched on leg, spun away from him and clipped the off-stump.

Ponting brought up the fith double century of his career by driving Kaneria through a gap in the covers and then raised his bat to an adoring crowd , including his parents, at his home ground.

His partnership with Clarke was 352 and was broken more than day after they came together on 3-71.

Ponting has been allowed to rediscover his form after being dropped on the first ball and the only issue he has to deal with now is when to declare.

Ponting and Clarke’s partnership has rescued the side from a nervous 3-71 and set a number of records on the way.

It was Clarke’s highest score in Test cricket, surpassing the 151 he made on debut against India in Bangalore in 2004.

It surpassed Ponting’s previous highest score since his 207 against Pakistan in Sydney five years ago.

It is also the highest fourth wicket stand by Australia against Pakistan.

Ponting’s side are in total command of the game and the visitors put in another dispirited display.

Mohammad Yousuf set a 7-2 field and had his bowlers stuck to a line wide of off stump in an attempt to limit the damage.

Ponting is expected to declare before tea.
