Australia's batsmen must lift if they want to build a healthy total in Sunday's Malaysian tri-series final against the West Indies, says captain Ricky Ponting.
Ponting's plan for the final involves building a big score to pressure a West Indian batting line-up prone to collapse when Chris Gayle and Brian Lara fail to play substantial innings.
But to do that he will need better returns from Australia's batsmen, including himself.
"We have (things to work on) there's no doubt about that, the running between the wickets wasn't great either, so that's another area of one day cricket and batting that's got to get a lot better before Sunday," Ponting said.
"Our batting hasn't been great right the way through, we've got out of jail a couple of times, Mike Hussey's hundred the other day and Brad Haddin has been terrific for us at seven, but the guys at the top haven't got in and got the runs we probably should've got just yet.
"If everything clicks for us on Sunday and we can apply ourselves better at the top of the order then hopefully we can post a lot better total."
India rolled West Indies for a meagre 146 in their final round robin match, and though Lara batted at No.9 to make things slightly misleading, Ponting said there was definitely a shaky quality to the Windies' middle order.
"They've been a little bit shaky chasing, which is a good sign going into a big game for us anyway, so it'll be nice to get a total tomorrow and see if they can chase them again," he said.
"I think their batting relies on a couple of players and their bowling's been helped by the conditions in the series, so they were the ones that deserved to get to the final first, and now we're there hopefully we can put on a good show."
Australia left Matthew Hayden, Daniel Cullen and Stuart Clark out of their final 12, with Shane Watson likely to open the batting alongside Simon Katich.
Ponting said the team for tomorrow would be an indicator of its direction for next month's more prestigious ICC Champions Trophy.
"I think it'll be pretty close, the team we've picked has had to come out of that Champions Trophy squad, so that's the way we're looking at it," he said.
"I don't think there'll be many changes, apart from Adam Gilchrist coming back of course, there can't be anyway because we've only got 14 in that squad."
