Ponting backs Clarke to come good

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has put in extra work with batsman Michael Clark in a bid to make the most of his "immense ability and potential".

Clarke, 24, hit 151 in his first Test innings in Bangalore a year ago but, apart from 141 against New Zealand soon after, has made few big scores since.

But Ponting is convinced he has what it takes to be prolific at Test level.

"We know how good he can be. If he gets his game in order and keeps learning, he'll make big runs," he explained.

Ponting sees something of himself in Clarke, having made 96 on his debut against Sri Lanka and recorded his first Test century in only his seventh match.

The New South Wales right-hander got plenty of starts in the recent Ashes series defeat against England but could not go on and build lengthy innings.

But Ponting feels the time they have spent together ironing out problems in his game will pay off sooner rather than later.

"I think he's finding his feet a little bit at Test level," he added.

"We know he made a dynamic start the same way that I did - our careers are following fairly similar paths.

"He's someone who's going to be around the team for some time, he's working extremely hard on his game.

"I've done a lot of one-on-one work with him over the last few weeks, talking about the game and working on the technique side of things."
