Michael Clarke is inspired to give retiring great Ricky Ponting the farewell he deserves
This is one of the toughest days of my cricket career.

To stand in a room at the team hotel with all the players and support staff and listen to Ricky Ponting say this will be his last Test made me feel numb.

Ricky struggled to finish what he was saying and we were all equally emotional.

I felt the same way at my press conference after training and struggled at times to talk about him.

Ricky is the last player in the team who began before me. He has been such a huge presence in Australian cricket it's going to feel strange walking out to play Sri Lanka next month without him in the team.

Ricky Ponting and his teammates can't hide emotion as he announces retirement from Test cricket
IT was the day that grown men cried.

Ricky Ponting could not finish telling his team mates this would be his last Test.

His team mates and support staff gathered together in a room at their Perth hotel broke down with him.

And captain Michael Clarke choked up when he attempted to talk about Ponting’s departure following the third Test against South Africa in Perth, which begins today.

Ricky Ponting's perfect timing returns
Ricky Ponting's immaculate timing and clear-headed instinct returned when it mattered. He jumped rather than be pushed, got on the front foot and took the decision away from a selection panel that was struggling to reach agreement on his fate.

Yesterday he announced he would retire from international cricket after the Perth Test, conceded he was "probably" - the qualifier was vintage Mowbray - not good enough to get to the Ashes and admitted he was disappointed with his recent return.

He will leave having played a game that will decide which side is the No 1 in Test cricket and tied with Steve Waugh as the most capped Australian player.

Walking into the SCG for last Sunday's One-day International felt very strange knowing that I wouldn't see the great Ricky Ponting walk into the ground as normal.

This got me thinking on two points. Firstly, was Ricky the greatest ODI player of all time? And secondly, for me it was a very sad way to see Ponting bow out of ODI cricket with a blindsided dropping.

As always I like to look at the positives, and in this case that is great career of the punchy little Tasmanian devil and the great joy he has brought to cricket lovers worldwide.

Former Australia Test captain Ricky Ponting has responded angrily to suggestions that he was reluctant to play for Tasmania in this week's Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia.

Ponting, who will fly out for South Africa with the Australian team on Friday, took offence to reports that he wanted to pull out of the Shield match after hearing that national team-mate Mike Hussey was to be rested.

"You've just made up a load of rubbish again today in the paper," Ponting fired at the offending journalist during a press conference at the WACA on Monday.

"You know it's not true and you've chosen to write the story that you wrote today, which is completely unfactual (sic).
